25+ Hybrid Plant Examples:Detailed Explanations And Images

A Hybrid plant is an offspring of two genetically distinct true breeding plant species, created by cross pollination. Here we are going to discuss briefly about some most common hybrid plant examples.

In most of the cases, the hybrid plants are human made. But there are also some rare hybrid plant species found which are created naturally. Here we mention some most common hybrid plant examples. These are-

Let’s have a closer look at the hybrid plant examples mentioned above.

Stargazer lily

Stargazer lily or Lilium ‘Stargazer’ is one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is a hybrid lily belonging to the oriental group. A Californian Lily breeder, Leslie Woodriff, first created stargazer lilies in 1974. It is mostly known for its fragrant perfume. It is a fast growing plant, especially in the full sunlight.  The blooming occurs at the time of summer. But there is a problem found that the plant is toxic to cat species, causing kidney failure if they ingested it.

Olympia

Olympia is also one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is a hybridised spinach species. It is known for its dark green leaves. The plant is high temperature resistant. It grows mostly in the summer season, vertically growing up from the soil. It is a faster growing species especially in the spring and summer seasons.

Meyer lemon

The Meyer lemon is a hybrid citrus fruit, created by a cross between a citron and pomelo. It is a dicot plant, belonging to the family Rutaceae. In 1908 agricultural explorer Frank Nicholas Meyer first introduced the plant in China. It is a yellow, round fruit, sweet and less acidic than normal citrus fruits (pH level varies between 2- 3 generally). It contains 8-10 dicot seeds in every fruit. In China, it is also used as an ornamental plant.

Pomato

Pomato is also one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is created by grafting potato and tomato plants together. Both of the tomato and potato species belong to the same family Solanaceae and share the same genus Solanum, that’s why they are closely related. In 2013 Thompson & Morgan company launched pomato commercially in the United Kingdom. A single pomato plant produces tomato in the vines and potato in the soil simultaneously.

Brimato

Another hybrid plant species created by interspecies grafting is Brimato. Just like the name it is a grafted plant by grafting brinjal and tomato plants together. Scientists at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research’s Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (ICAR-IIVR) in Varanasi first introduced the brimato to all. The brimato plant produces both brinjal or eggplant and tomato simultaneously.

Argemone mexicana

Argemone mexicana is one of the most common hybrid plant examples, occurring by natural hybridisation. It is native to Mexico and the western US. It is highly tolerant to poor soil, and also survives in drought situations. The seed oil from the plant is extracted, known as katkar oil. It is used to cure many problems, mostly for medical purposes.

Sudachi yuzu

Sudachi yuzu is a hybrid Citrus fruit, created by crossing between yuzu and tachibana oranges. The plant is one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is native to Japan. This fruit is neither sour as citrus nor eaten as fruit, moreover is used for garnishing dishes. It is also used as a food flavouring agent. The fruit is highly nutritious, containing high amounts of calcium and vitamin c or ascorbic acid in it.

Blood lime

Blood lime is also one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is created by crossing red finger lime and the Ellendale Mandarin. It is native to Australia and was developed by Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). It is a salt resistant crop and also can be eaten as fruit. The fruit is smaller in size than limes and just like its name the fruit is usually red or burgundy coloured. In 2004 the blood lime crop first appeared in markets of Australia.

Broccoflower

Broccoflower or Brassica oleracea is a hybrid plant produced by crossing broccoli and cauliflower together. It can be created naturally by pollinators or also done by artificial crossover. There are two most common types of broccoflower found: the first one is Green cauliflower and another one is Romanesco broccoli. The green cauliflower is very similar to normal cauliflower but the curd is green coloured. The romanesco broccoli is pointed, conical and has spiralling clusters of florets.

Better boy tomato

Better boy tomato is one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is mostly known for its superior flavour. From this hybrid tomato species a large number of fruit is produced and it is also a Guinness record holder in case of fruit production from a single plant. The fruits ripen in about 72 days from harvesting.

Jostaberry

Jostaberry is one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is created by crossing three different plant species from the genus Ribes, such as blackcurrant Ribes nigrum, the North American coastal black gooseberry Ribes divaricatum, and the European gooseberry Ribes uva crispa. It is a highly nutritious black coloured berry, containing high amounts of vitamin C in it. The commercial usage of this plant is limited because of its complicated harvesting.

Plumcots

Plumcots are one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is produced by crossing plum and apricot species ( Prunus salicina and Prunus armeniaca). Plumcots are also sometimes referred to as apriplums. The plumcot trees reproduce asexually by budding.

Rangpur or Kassia lime

Rangpur or Kassia lime is a hybrid citrus fruit created by crossing the Mandarin Orange and citron. It was first introduced in Florida by the Reasoner Brothers of Oneco, in the late nineteenth century. The fruit is highly acidic in nature like other citrus fruits and is used as the substitute for limes. It is hugely found in Indian subcontinent areas including Bangladesh. According to a city called Rangpur in Bangladesh, the fruit was named so.

Orangelo

Orangelo is one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is created by crossing orange and grapefruit together. In 1956, Carlos G. Moscoso noticed the plant in Puerto Rican highlands. These fruits are large, bright yellow in colour and sweeter than the grapefruits. Like the oranges, these fruits are round pear shaped and easy to peel. It is first found in Puerto Rican areas.

Pomelo

Pomelo or citrus maxima is a natural hybrid citrus fruit belonging to the family Rutaceae. It was thought that the pomelo is produced by the crossover of grapefruit and orange. It is native to southeast Asia. The pomelo tree is thick, having irregular branches. The flowers of the tree are white and yellow in colour. The pomelo is a highly nutritious fruit containing 10% carbohydrates, proteins and is rich in vitamin C.

Tangelo

Just like pomelo, orangelo the tangelo is also one of the most common hybrid plant examples. Very similar to pomelo and orangelo, it is also a hybrid citrus fruit. There are also several varieties of tangelo found such as Orlando, Minneola, Jamaican tangelo, etc.

Oroblanco

Oroblanco is one of the most common hybrid plant examples. In 1981 after its development by Robert Soost and James W. Cameron from the citrus experiment station of the University of California, first patented oroblanco. A diploid acidless pomelo and a seedy white tetraploid grapefruit crossover to produce triploid seedless oroblanco. In the case of its taste, oroblanco is less bitter than grapefruit. Just like oranges, it is round or oval-shaped and easy to peel.

Pineberry

Pineberry is a hybrid plant species produced by crossing strawberry species Fragaria chiloensis and Fragaria virginiana together. It is one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is smaller in size than the strawberry and white in colour with red acheness. The plant produces fruits from spring to summer. In 2002 pineberry was first found in South America. It is mostly cultivated now in Belgium. It is a highly disease-resistant hybrid plant species. In 2012 it first commercially came into markets in the United States.

Tayberry

Tayberry is one of the most popular hybrid plant examples. It is produced by crossing blackberry and red raspberry together. It belongs to the genus Rubus from the family Rosaceae. It can be eaten as a fruit or cooked.  In 1979 Derek L. Jennings of Dundee from the Scottish Horticultural Research Institute, Scotland first introduced the species and according to the name of the river Tay the fruit is named Tayberry. It is a reddish purple coloured, cone-shaped berry that grows in the early mid to late summer season.

Lemato

Lemato is a hybrid fruit species typically made by crossing lemon and tomato species together. It is a tomato like fruit having a hint of lemon flavour in it. It is typically round or oval shaped like lemons , also having lemon yellow coloured outer skin in it. But the inner fleshy palp area is similar to tomato and red in colour.

Mandarinquat

Mandarinquat is a hybrid fruit, member of the citrofortunella group. It is also one of the most common hybrid plant examples. In 1932, Dr. Eugene May from the United States Department of Agriculture first introduced the Nippon orangequat by crossing a Satsuma mandarin and a Meiwa kumquat together. It is a medium sized tree with long, narrow and green coloured leaves in it. The mandarinquat is a yellow or orange coloured fruit, and can be eaten whole just like a kumquat.

limequat

Limequat is also one of the most common hybrid plant examples. Just like mandarinquat it is also a hybrid plant belonging to the citrofortunella hybrid group. In 1909 Walter Tennyson Swingle from the United States Department of Agriculture first introduced the limequat by crossing key lime and kumquat. The fruit is small round or oval shaped, greenish yellow in colour. It can be eaten whole like kumquat or by squishing the juice. It is also used as a food flavouring agent. It is acidic, and contains high amounts of vitamin C in it.

Rabbage

Rabbage is also one of the most common hybrid plant examples. It is produced by crossing two intergenic species Cabbage and Radish (Brassica and Raphanus).

Imperial lemon

It is a hybrid fruit species produced by crossing lemon and grapefruit together. The imperial lemon belongs to the family Rutaceae under the genus citrus. The fruit is larger than the lemon, round or oval shaped and yellow in colour.

Lemonimes

Lemonime is a hybrid citrus fruit created by crossing the two most common Citrus lemon and lime together.

As a whole, we can say that the hybridisation of plant species plays a very significant role in agricultural aspects. It makes the species more temperature resistant, salt resistant as well as disease resistant. Here we mention some most common hybrid plant examples.
